Quantum computers and quantum coherence
If the states of spins in solids can be created, manipulated, and measured at the single-quantum level, an entirely new form of information processing, quantum computing, will be possible. We "rst give an overview of quantum information processing, showing that the famous Shor speedup of integer factoring is just one of a host of important applications for qubits, including cryptography, counte...

The effect of the inevitable coupling to external degrees of freedom of a quantum computer are examined. It is found that for quantum calculations (in which the maintenance of coherence over a large number of states is important), not only must the coupling be small but the time taken in the quantum calculation must be less than the thermal time scale, ¯ h/k B T. For longer times the condition ...
متن کاملTopics in Quantum Computers
I provide an introduction to quantum computers, describing how they might be realized using language accessible to a solid state physicist. A listing of the minimal requirements for creating a quantum computer is given. I also discuss several recent developments in the area of quantum error correction, a subject of importance not only to quantum computation, but also to some aspects of the foun...

We analyse dissipation in quantum computation and its destructive impact on eeciency of quantum algorithms. We discuss relations between decoherence and computational complexity and show that quantum factorisation algorithm must be modiied in order to be regarded as eecient and realistic. Our model od decoherence is quite general and incorporates reservoirs with a large coherence length.

This research paper gives an overview of quantum computers – description of their operation, differences between quantum and silicon computers, major construction problems of a quantum computer and many other basic aspects. No special scientific knowledge is necessary for the reader. Introduction to Quantum Computers Around 2030 computers might not have any transistors and chips. Think of a com...
